An Economical and Dependable Automatic Pet Feeder for Multi-cat Household By: Cat Lady
I was recently in the market for another automatic pet feeder because the company that made my 3 feedandgo feeders went out of business. But, I was reluctant to buy another automatic feeder because automatic feeders on the market do not support local programming; if the website goes down, the feeders are useless. Also, all the companies with maybe the exception of the manufacturer of this Petsafe feeder are small and so, the longevity of the supporting websites are in question. The Petsafe feeder was so simple to connect to my router, I could not believe it. If you have more than one cat, get the splitter which is terrific for three reasons--avoids investing in more feeders, hassling with syncing the feeders to dispense at the same time, and yields smaller food portions per cat (smallest amount dispensed by the feeder is 1/8 cup which is too much for one meal for the higher calorie kibble if you want to feed 3 or more times per day). For the splitter, you need to get one dish per chute with sides at 90 degree angle to the base and around 1 and 3/4 (+/- 1/8 ) inches in height and no more than 3/8 inch thick (Ethical Pet 58544 Spot Nantucket Cat Dish, 5 inch that can be purchased on Amazon), so the dish wedges under the chute and does not move from under the chute. Before I left for a 2 week trip, I tried to get the kitties used to the new feeder with a late night snack feed. The one issue that other reviewers pointed out is that the 3 way splitter causes dishes to be close together, although the dishes I bought from Amazon could be arranged to give maximum space apart due to oval shape (see photo). One of my kitties was reluctant to join the other two at the time of feeding, probably due to closeness of dishes. But, I decided to go with the one feeder anyway, conveying to my pet care person that she might have to make a second visit each day to feed kitties a wet food meal each if need be. I have a pet cam that allows me to watch the kitties at meal time. Well, shortly after I left for vacation, I saw through my pet cam, my little guy got over his reluctance (see photo taken though cam). Best I could tell, the feeder never failed during the 2 weeks I was away and the food hopper never had to be filled during that time either. For peace of mind, I like the fact that this feeder is powered by AC, but also had a battery back-up. Finally, as resourceful as my boys are, they have not managed to break into the food hopper during the month the feeder has been set up. All in all, a reliable pet feeder plus splitter combination which provides the best value for those who need an automatic pet feeder for a multiple cat household.
